Fes does not have a single centre. Fes el-Bali is the large historic ensemble of lanes, funduqs, madrasas and craft districts. Fes el-Jdid represents another stage of the city’s history, while the New City provides broader roads and generally simpler access to the railway station and vehicles.
Choosing a base means balancing immersion, ease of arrival and the number of journeys. This guide does not publish a hotel league table. It helps you verify location and constraints before using a booking partner.
Fes el-Bali: stay inside the historic medina
Morocco’s National Tourist Office presents Fes el-Bali as the old heart of the city and highlights the density of its heritage and crafts. Staying here places the first walks close to historic lanes and makes it possible to return on foot after several visits.
That proximity has practical limits. Vehicles cannot reach every address, orientation takes time and some surfaces are uneven. Ask for the nearest gate, drop-off point, luggage assistance and the real length of the final walk.
Bab Boujloud and medina entrances: a useful compromise
An address near a clearly identified gate simplifies meetings with a guide or driver. The National Tourist Office presents Bab Boujloud as a straightforward entrance, but distances inside the lanes still vary greatly.
Do not confuse “near Bab Boujloud” with immediate vehicle access. Check gradients, steps and lighting along the route. For a late arrival, ask whether someone genuinely meets the traveller at the agreed point.
Fes el-Jdid: between palaces, gardens and the medina
Fes el-Jdid can provide an intermediate position for exploring several layers of the city. It is distinct from Fes el-Bali and can support walks around walls, large gardens and historic districts without placing the whole stay inside the oldest street network.
Its value depends on the exact address. Measure the walk to planned places and access to taxis. A map may place two sectors close together when a wall, gate or pedestrian-unfriendly road separates them.
New City: station, services and road access
The New City suits travellers arriving by train, continuing to another destination or looking for broad avenues, restaurants and urban services. Vehicles can generally reach accommodation entrances more easily.
The trade-off is a daily journey to Fes el-Bali. It may remain manageable when visits are grouped, but becomes tiring with repeated crossings. Choose a clear medina drop-off and agree on the taxi fare before departure when the meter is not used.
Families, luggage and reduced mobility
Inside the medina, a pushchair, heavy suitcase or walking difficulty changes the experience. Ask about steps, lifts, passage widths and the distance from vehicle access. The word “accessible” should describe a complete route, not only a room.
With children, check stairs, terraces, railings and internal noise. A traditional house can be remarkable without having been designed to contemporary building standards.
Riad or guesthouse: understand the layout
An older house may arrange rooms around a courtyard, with narrow stairs and terraces. Ask for the room floor, heating in cooler periods, ventilation, bathroom layout and sound insulation. A beautiful courtyard photograph does not answer those questions.
For a vehicle arrival, verify parking or the point where the driver must stop. If a porter is involved, clarify the service and price before the journey.
Excursions to Meknes, Volubilis or the Middle Atlas
The best area depends on planned day trips. A modern-city base may simplify road or rail departures, while a medina base removes a transfer at the beginning of each day devoted to Fes.
Do not add an excursion only because it looks close on a map. Confirm schedules, pickup and return. On a two-night visit, concentrating on Fes may be more coherent than multiplying journeys.

- Is medina immersion or transport convenience the main priority?
- What is the real drop-off point and who helps with luggage?
- How many steps separate the lane from the room?
- Do excursions require frequent departures outside the medina?
- Are cancellation and late-arrival terms explicit?
