Mobile boarding passes at Moroccan airports: what is actually changing

Airports of Morocco is progressively introducing mobile boarding passes. Here is what changes, and what passengers must still verify before departure.

Airports of Morocco, the brand operated by Morocco’s National Airports Office, announced on 23 July 2026 that mobile boarding passes would be progressively introduced. An eligible passenger can present the code received after online check-in on a phone instead of printing the boarding pass.

This change can simplify one part of the airport journey. It does not remove identity checks, airline conditions or the entry requirements of the destination. MOP separates the announced system from the checks that every passenger still needs to make.

A progressive rollout, not a universal rule

The ONDA release says that the system will be progressively deployed with airlines that have completed the required technical, operational and regulatory integration. Passengers should not assume that every flight, carrier and travel situation is already supported.

The airline’s official app or website remains the first reference before departure. If it issues a mobile pass and confirms that it is valid for the flight, the code can be used at compatible checkpoints. When online check-in does not complete, the traveller must follow the carrier’s stated procedure.

How the digital journey is intended to work

After online check-in, the airline provides a boarding pass with a secure code. The passenger presents it at compatible controls and automated gates. According to ONDA, the airline completes the necessary documentary checks upstream in line with applicable requirements.

A boarding pass is not a travel document. A passport, visa, permission for a minor or another original document may still be required depending on nationality, route and destination. Only the carrier and competent authorities can confirm those requirements.

Check eligibility before leaving for the airport

Seeing a pass in an app does not prove that every stage will be paperless. Confirm the check-in status, terminal, airline cut-off instructions and any requirement to visit a desk for document inspection or checked luggage.

A message such as “boarding pass available at the airport” or “verification required” normally means that a human step remains. Treat that message as an operational instruction rather than an error to work around.

Make the phone usable at the checkpoint

The pass should remain available when mobile data is slow. Add it to the wallet supported by the airline or save an offline copy when the carrier permits this. Raise the screen brightness so that the scanner can read the code without repeated handling.

Charge the phone and protect it with a screen lock. A cabin-permitted power bank can offer a backup, subject to battery transport rules. Never publish a boarding pass: the code and booking details may expose personal information.

Keep a backup without creating confusion

A screenshot may help if the app stops responding, but some dynamic passes or checks require the active version supplied by the carrier. Follow the instructions shown rather than assuming that every screenshot will be accepted.

If the phone is lost, damaged or flat, an airline desk or kiosk may be able to issue a replacement. Availability and any conditions belong to the airline. Reaching the airport with a sensible margin is safer than leaving a technical problem until the final minutes.

Baggage, security and border checks remain separate

The announcement concerns the boarding pass. It does not turn checked luggage into cabin baggage or change restrictions on liquids, prohibited objects and batteries. Security screening continues under the rules that apply to the airport and flight.

Border authorities may still request original documents at departure or arrival. MOP’s guide to Morocco entry formalities provides the wider preparation context.

What the change can genuinely improve

When available, a mobile pass reduces paper handling and can make compatible checkpoints easier to use. It extends a journey in which booking, check-in and flight information are already commonly managed online.

The benefit still depends on airline integration and the passenger’s circumstances. A family, a person who needs a visa check or a traveller requiring assistance may retain a desk step. The quality of the system therefore depends on clear guidance as much as speed.

Before travelling to the airport

  • Check-in confirmed through the airline’s official channel.
  • Mobile boarding pass actually issued for the flight.
  • Passport and other original documents accessible.
  • Phone charged, screen readable and an offline copy saved when allowed.
  • Terminal and baggage instructions checked on the day.
  • Backup procedure known if the code disappears.
  • No image of the pass shared on social media.
