Preparing to enter Morocco starts with a simple rule: check your situation based on your nationality, the type of passport used, the purpose of the trip and its duration. The entry requirements are not the same for everyone, and a previous experience does not guarantee that the same rules apply today.
This guide presents the official information available as of 22 August 2026. It does not replace either the decision of the border authorities or the instructions of a consulate. Before departure, the final check must always be carried out on the websites of the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the relevant consulate and, if necessary, the official eVisa platform.
The passport is the first document to check
The Moroccan Ministry states that every foreign traveller must have a valid passport or travel document recognised by Morocco. For a tourist stay, the document must, at a minimum, cover the entire planned stay. A national identity card should not be regarded as a general substitute for a passport.
Check the expiry date several weeks before departure, as well as the physical condition of the document. A damaged identity page, a passport reported lost and then found, or a name that differs from the one on the ticket may result in denied boarding even before Moroccan border control.
The name entered with the carrier must match the one in the passport. If you have multiple nationalities, choose at the time of booking which document you will present at boarding and on arrival, then use it consistently throughout the journey.
Visa exemption does not mean no entry requirements
Nationals of certain countries are exempt from visa requirements for a tourist stay. The official list is published by the Moroccan consular services and may change. It must be consulted when preparing the trip, without relying on a list copied from a blog or saved in an old bookmark.
For a person exempt from visa requirements, a tourist stay is generally limited to three months. This period does not automatically grant the right to work, study or settle in the country. The actual purpose of the stay must correspond to the entry conditions used.
The authorities may request documents consistent with the stated trip: a return or onward ticket, the address of the first accommodation and proof of sufficient funds. Keep this information accessible offline, as a dead phone or unavailable connection should not prevent you from presenting it.
When a visa is required
If your nationality or circumstances require a visa, the application must be made through the relevant Moroccan consulate or via the electronic procedure when it is available for your profile. The Ministry distinguishes in particular between short-validity, long-validity and transit visas and, in specific regulated cases, visas issued at the border.
A tourist visa is not interchangeable with authorisation to work or study. Prepare the application corresponding to the actual purpose of the trip and check the documents required by the consular representation responsible for your area.
Do not pay an intermediary solely because they promise guaranteed issuance. The authorities alone make the decision. A website that imitates official colours, adds high fees or promises undocumented priority processing should be treated with caution.
The eVisa is issued through the official platform
Morocco launched its electronic visa in 2022 through acces-maroc.ma. The eVisa is an individual authorisation that may be valid for up to 180 days from the date of issue and allows a maximum stay of 30 days under the framework announced by the Ministry.
Eligibility depends on specific criteria, which may include nationality, a residence permit in an eligible country or possession of certain visas. As the system has evolved since its launch, use the platform’s questionnaire rather than a historical list.
The processing time announced at launch was 72 hours for standard processing and 24 hours for express processing. These are processing targets, not a guarantee of issuance. Submit the application with sufficient time to spare and do not purchase a non-refundable service solely on the basis of an application that is still being processed.
Travelling with a child requires additional checks
Each child must have the travel document required for their circumstances. The rules of the country of departure apply in addition to Morocco’s entry rules, particularly when a minor travels alone, with only one parent or with a third party.
Bring the necessary parental authorisations, relevant proof of parentage and, where applicable, custody decisions. The documents required vary according to the family circumstances and nationality. A consulate can confirm the requirements applicable to a particular case.
To avoid unnecessary stress, group each child’s documents in a separate folder and keep a secure digital copy. The copy helps in the event of loss, but it does not replace the original at border control.
On arrival: prepare for a straightforward border check
Before landing or docking, keep your passport, any required visa, accommodation address and return ticket within easy reach. Answer questions about the purpose and duration of your stay simply. A modified booking is not a problem in itself if you can explain your actual itinerary.
After the check, verify the documents given to you and follow customs instructions. If you enter with a foreign-registered vehicle, temporary import procedures apply and the vehicle’s departure must be properly recorded.
For currency, a declaration becomes mandatory from the regulatory threshold equivalent to 100,000 dirhams. The currency rules are detailed in our guide https://www.lemarocouvresesportes.com/en/money-morocco-currency-cards-cash-tipping/
Extending a stay is not automatic
A person exempt from visa requirements who wishes to remain beyond three months must apply for authorisation from the relevant Moroccan authorities, particularly the General Directorate of National Security. For a person subject to visa requirements, the permitted duration depends on the document issued.
Do not wait until the last day to look for a solution. A postponed ticket or extended rental does not change immigration status. Overstaying may place the traveller in an irregular situation and complicate their departure from the country.
Plans to work, study or reside in the country must be prepared using the corresponding procedure. Tourist entry is not an administrative shortcut to long-term settlement.
The easiest mistakes to avoid
The first mistake is booking with a document that expires during the stay. The second is using a commercial website as though it were the official eVisa portal. The third is assuming that an exemption applying to a friend also applies to another nationality.
Also avoid keeping all supporting documents solely in an email inbox that is inaccessible offline. Download them before departure. Do not send a full copy of your passport to an unverified contact, and conceal unnecessary information when making a simple enquiry.
Finally, check the transit conditions. A stopover may impose rules specific to the country travelled through, even if entry into Morocco is authorised.
The checklist to review 72 hours before departure

- Name on the ticket identical to the one on the document presented.
- Exemption, consular visa or eVisa checked using an official source.
- Necessary authorisations for each minor.
- Return or onward ticket available offline.
- Address of the first accommodation and local contact details accessible.
- Insurance and assistance valid in Morocco.
- Transit rules and any carrier alerts checked.
- Secure copies of documents kept separately from the originals.
